Overcoming doubt has been something I’ve had to become more aware of, especially when it comes to the things I desire.
I’ve noticed how easily we can imagine the life we want, become excited about its possibilities, and then begin questioning whether any of it can happen. We wonder how it will happen, when it will happen, and whether it will happen for us at all.
It has made me think about the difference between wanting something and actually believing it is possible.
Because it’s one thing to desire a particular experience, but another to have faith in the possibility of experiencing it.
And I think much of that difference comes down to what we entertain after we’ve expressed our desires.
Wanting Something Isn’t the Same as Believing in It
You can want something with all your heart and still find yourself questioning whether you can have it.
For example, you want a better life but keep imagining how difficult it will be to create one. You want to experience abundance but repeatedly remind yourself of what you cannot afford.
Similarly, you may want to pursue something meaningful but question whether you are capable of doing it.
For a moment, you allow yourself to see it as a possibility.
Then the questions begin.
Is it realistic? How could it happen? What if it doesn’t work out?
Before you know it, the excitement you felt has been replaced by uncertainty.
I’ve come to see that wanting something and believing in it are two different experiences.
Desire allows you to imagine what you would love to experience. Faith allows you to remain open to the possibility that you can experience it.
You can desire something without having confidence in its possibility. You can imagine a different experience while remaining convinced that your current circumstances will never change.
Even more, you can spend years hoping for something without ever allowing yourself to genuinely believe it can happen.
That’s why I think overcoming doubt is essential when it comes to your desires.
Overcoming Doubt by Paying Attention to What You Entertain
One thing I’ve noticed is how quickly doubt can follow a thought about something we desire.
We imagine something wonderful, but instead of remaining with that possibility, we begin entertaining everything that could prevent it from happening.
We replay old experiences, consider our current circumstances, and remind ourselves of all the reasons it might not work out.
Of course, having a doubtful thought doesn’t mean you’ve lost your faith. The difference is in whether you continue giving that thought your attention until it becomes more familiar than the possibility you originally imagined.
This is why I’m becoming more mindful of my inner conversations.
I don’t want to spend more time convincing myself something cannot happen than allowing myself to believe it can.
Be Careful Whose Doubts You Make Your Own
Sometimes doubt doesn’t begin with us. It comes from the opinions, expectations, and experiences of other people.
Someone may tell you that what you desire is unrealistic. Another person may share why something similar didn’t work for them. Even when their intentions are good, their experiences don’t have to become the boundaries of what you believe is possible for your own life.
I’ve experienced this myself.
There have been times when I felt certain about what I wanted, only to begin doubting myself after listening to someone else’s opinion.
This made me realize how important it is to be mindful of what I allow to influence my thinking.
I’ve learned that I don’t have to adopt every opinion I hear. Other people are looking at life through their own experiences, just as I am looking through mine.
You can listen without allowing someone else’s uncertainty to become your own.
Most importantly, you can stop giving so much attention to conversations that repeatedly make you question what you believe is possible.
You Don’t Have to Know How Everything Will Happen
I think one of the reasons we struggle with doubt is because we want to know how everything will work out before we allow ourselves to believe.
We want the evidence first. We want to see the steps, understand the process, and know that the outcome is certain.
But not knowing how something will happen doesn’t automatically mean it cannot happen.
There are so many experiences in life that we couldn’t have predicted beforehand. Sometimes things come together in ways we never considered, and what once seemed distant becomes part of our everyday experience.
You don’t have to have every detail figured out to believe in the possibility of something different.
Overcoming Doubt is to Remain Faithful to What You Desire
The more I think about it, the more I realize how important it is to be conscious of the relationship between our desires and our beliefs.
You can allow yourself to imagine something beautiful without immediately searching for reasons it won’t happen. You can experience uncertainty without making it the final word on what is possible.
And when doubt does arise, you don’t have to turn it into a reason to abandon what you desire.
For me, overcoming doubt isn’t about pretending that uncertainty never exists.
It’s about becoming aware of the thoughts I entertain and choosing not to let every doubtful thought take me away from what I believe is possible.
Believe in what you desire. Be mindful of what you entertain. And don’t let doubt become more familiar to you than faith.
